Recent Comments Widget Updated

Following up on a bug report from Molly I updated the Recent Comments Widget. It now supports both Full and Short feed settings.
If you have installed the widget, you don't have to do anything, it will just keep working. Thanks Molly!

Hans, thanx for your valuable tips...I will not forget it!

As for bringing focus, I had thought about making it a blog for bloggers. But then, to my dismay, I found that those who post on a wide range of topics usually get more traffic.

I do use Google Analytics.

And regarding your post for drop-caps, will you update it, and(quite selfish,eh?) link to me? Many of your readers had asked for an easier way to implement it for previous posts, which is why I dug this up!

I had requested you to consider converting an open-source web template for me..(and others too?), especially after you did Hobit. Would you do it?

Regards, and keep up the good work,

Sumesh(youngest Indian blogger @14yrs?)

Update Details Please: I have decided to host your Recent Comments source file on my own server in order to translate the English text in French. Can you tell me more about the importance and nature of this new update? Is it possible to update your transformed source file hosted on my server without having to go through all the previous steps of translation that I’ve already been through?

Hans,

Thank you very much for the work you've done on this Recent Comments widget. Before learning about the JSON option, I had written a script that parsed through the HTML emails and constructed a static JS script that I was hosting to do roughly the same thing. Now I've built some modifications into your script to do things the way I like. If you're interested, you're welcome to incorporate some of my changes back into your script.

I like showing recent comments organized by post, so I actually show the last 5 most-recently-commented-on posts, with the most recent comments for each post.

I also wanted to have the true titles, so I built in a two-step process that first runs through the post JSON feed building an array, then uses that array with the comments JSON feed to show the true post titles.

I added a flag option to make the comments link work with blogs that haven't yet switched to the widgets but are still using an old-style template.

I also added a flag (at my wife's request) to skip anonymous comments if desired (since she's says they're almost always spam).

If you're interested, you can email me at mcphn at yahoo dot com, and I can point you to the code.

Thanks again!

Mark

Downloaded and edited the code and it's just perfect - except for one thing. Lines insist on breaking after the author's name. Is there any way to make it run on after the name? (And/or is there something I need to learn about the script that I'm missing?) THANKS!!!!!!

Hi! I've been reading your blog from the beginning..Thank you for your wonderful work! Keep up the good work.

Hans said...

@4lain: there is an extra test inside the code now, that has no effect on the translation.
So the best would be to download the new file, look for the extra if-then statement, and add that to your code.

@mark: it is a great job you did! If I understand the workings a little better, I will do a post on it!

@jau: the breaks are added in the code. Download it and edit it. Look for the </br>-tags in the document.write()-statements. Then host the new code yourself and you are ready.

jau said...

Hans - Downloaded and edited very successfully! But it's not that there are breaks - it's that there is no apparent way to separate the text ("commented on" or "on" as I've edited it) from the post title. The text will not relinquish the post title!! Any suggestions are welcome.

Hans - I've installed the widget and it looks fine, but for some reason my blog is not rendering the labels (under FF or IE) so all hyperlinks lead to top of post page. Presumably I've got some option switched off somewhere. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Update Details Please-Thanks Hans!: Update of the hosted file successfully done by following your instructions. I don’t know how you manage to respond to all your visitors’ disparate preoccupations while being busy, but I really appreciate that you took the time to address my concern. Feeling confident that my concern is going to be address in time makes it easier to manage the frustration of having to wait a few days or to tolerate unknown length of delays. Good idea your message board! Your blog is a model in more than just the esthetical, the technical or the convivial ways to me. When I visit your pleasing blog, I also have the sense that I’m visiting a great blogger!

Whatever the problem was, it's gone away now I've regenerated my template from the classical one to a new blogger one. So thanks anyway. Great widget that works really well. I used storago before and it was down all the time.

Hi Hans, there seems to be a problem with the recent comments widget. It isn't displaying the latest coments but some from November last year. I thought that it was peculiar to my blog, but am seeing the same on your blog too. Have a fix?

I am using the recent comment widgets. I love it! Thank you for making it available.

I noticed today, it's showing the really old post, the ones from over 2 months ago.

Just wondering if you noticed this too.

I am having the same problem it is now show the last recent comments as February 6th

Charlie said...

just a follow up on my previous comment

I thought perhaps it was confusing February 16th for February 6th but there have now been comments made on the 17th but it is still showing the last comment as the 6th

This widget is a very popular part of my blog and I would greatly appreciate your help in squashing this bug

Hi, Hans. I've tried your widget (recent posts and comments)and they works fine, but I have two doubts:
- the first is about the line in the template por accessing your js file. ¿Is it really necessary? I've seen in the code of the scripts that there is a src there indicating the js path.
- the second is about the possisility of translating the script because my blog is in spanish and it's a little annoying to have the date format and indications in english.

Beta Bloke said...

@Javier: the Recent Posts Widget needs the recentposts2.js file. This js-file contains the callbackfunction that is used by the JSON-feed. Feel free to download this js-file, and change it to your needs. Then upload it somewhere else, and you have your own, translated, widget.

Javier said...

Thanks again, Hans.
I've translated both widgets (posts and comments) and they work fine and in spanish.
If someone wants these spanish js versions, they're at http://tomatmus.googlepages.com/
with their original names plus _sp

I've noticed that the final "Widget by..." doesn't work (even in english version). It's not a problem for me, but maybe for you...

hans, the comments widget is a brilliant facility. thanks very much.

one question. how quickly should i be expecting it to update, once a comment is added? it seems a little erratic.

sputnik said...

oo. ive just seen yours updates straight away. maybe ishould reinstall it.

sorry, not much of a tech-head.

Hi Hans. Hope you're still monitoring comments.

I'm getting a problem with links to comments from the sidebar. After a certain number of them for a given post, the link no longer takes you to the correct position on the post page, but simply to the top of the page. Is there some way of fixing this?

cheers, Fabian

Mr Smith said...

I've got the same problem. Exactly the same. Thanks for help.

Fabian Tassano said...

Mr Smith, if you ever find the answer, could you pass it on by commenting here? that would be great.

Explain how to incorporate yours changes? How can we do that?

Hans, I've downloaded and saved the javascript-library file (beautifulbeta.js) and I'd like to use it to call the recent posts from, where do I upload it to? my template? If so, where?

Your instructions say "Or download the file and host it from your own location. Right-click the link, and save the file to your computer." Having saved it, what do I do next?

regards

Steve
